On September 13, 2024, the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) in Vietnam issued Circular No. 10/2024/TT-BTTTT, delaying the shutdown of the 2G network to October 15, 2024.
This postponement comes after previous regulations set to end 2G services on September 16, 2024, for GSM-based systems on specified frequency bands.
The decision was influenced by concerns over communication disruptions due to recent natural disasters, with many telecommunications companies requesting an extension to ensure continuity for around 1.8 million subscribers still using 2G devices.
During a press briefing, officials explained that the delay aims to address urgent communication needs in light of ongoing emergency situations, while still supporting the transition to more advanced mobile technologies.
This temporary measure will not affect the long-term strategy to phase out 2G services entirely. The circular will be in effect from September 16 to October 15, 2024.
